Teacher suspended for denying Wiccan altar

A Guthrie Center teacher this week received a five-day unpaid suspension for insubordination for not allowing a student to build a Wiccan altar in his shop class - discipline he said he still doesn't agree with. Balan Nur had worked for Alamo Rent-A-Car for two years, wearing a headscarf as part of her Islamic religious practice during Ramadan. Culpeper school officials reverse decision to stop teaching Anne Frank diary

Culpeper County public school officials have reversed an earlier decision to stop teaching a version of Anne Frank's diary that contains passages one parent found inappropriate. School administrators said they would convene a committee this spring to review the book, in accordance with the school's policy of handling complaints about instructional materials. The earlier decision to exclude the book from classroom lessons had not followed the school system's policy.

Muslim parents of Ohio runaway reject resolution

The Muslim parents of an Ohio girl who ran away from home claiming she feared harm for becoming Christian have rejected a deal meant to resolve the conflict. Mohamed and Aysha Bary of New Albany, Ohio, withdrew their consent in a court filing Thursday that alleges misrepresentation in the plan approved Jan. 19.

Massachusetts: Ban on Head Coverings

The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services instituted a ban on clothing that obscures the face, including face veils and burqas, weeks after a Muslim alumnus who is also the son of a professor was charged with plotting terrorism strikes. Michael Ratty, a spokesman for the Boston school, said the policy was developed in the fall during a review of safety procedures and was unrelated to the arrest of the 2008 graduate, Tarek Mehanna.
