WASHINGTON — It was cold and drizzling outside the City Courthouse just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, but no one seemed to mind among the same-sex couples waiting for the chance to apply for a marriage license.  “This is a dream come true,” said Sinjoyla Townsend, 41, as she smiled ear to ear and held up her ticket indicating she was first in line with her partner of 12 years, Angelisa Young, 47. “We wanted it so bad.”  Gay rights advocates hailed the day ...

In any public conversation, that which defines us is the manner in which we debate. Do we do so with integrity and civility, or not? The Jan. 24 guest essay in the Register by Bryan English argued that Iowans have a right to vote to allow or to ban same-sex marriage. However, English's article distorted important facts. Regardless of the religious right's attempts to rewrite history, marriage has always been an organic, ever-changing institution. Even Biblical literalists must acknowledge tha...

Hawaii kills same-sex civil unions bill

Posted by Iowa Civil Rights Commission on January 29, 2010 at 8:31 PM Comments comments (0)

Hawaii lawmakers declined to vote Friday on a bill that would have allowed same-sex civil unions, effectively killing the measure. The state House of Representatives decided to indefinitely postpone a decision on whether to grant gay and lesbian couples the same rights and benefits the state provides to married couples. The state Senate had approved a civil unions bill last week. But House leadership wavered on pushing the controversial issue. Last year, 33 of 51 House members voted in favor ...

SAN FRANCISCO — After two weeks of testimony by witnesses seeking to overturn Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage, the defense began its case on Monday, with a lengthy overview of the recent political gains by gay men and lesbians in the state and beyond. The testimony apparently was an effort to undercut the plaintiffs’ argument that the proposition was part of a systemic and historical bias against gay men and lesbians.

A judge has thrown out a lawsuit by opponents of same-sex marriage against the city’s elections board. The plaintiffs sued after the Board of Elections and Ethics refused to put their initiative, which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman, on the ballot. The board ruled that it violated the city’s Human Rights Act. Judge Judith N. Macaluso of District of Columbia Superior Court said the board’s action was justified because the initiative would in effect a...

Lawmakers in Mexico City have become the first in Latin America to legalise gay marriage.

City legislators passed the bill 39-20, with five abstentions. The city's mayor is now widely expected to sign the bill into law. Gay marriage is only allowed in seven countries and some parts of the US. Certain parts of Latin America allow civil unions for same-sex couples. The Catholic Church and conservative groups had opposed Mexico City's move. The bill calls for a change in the definition of ...

WASHINGTON — The City Council passed a measure Tuesday legalizing same-sex marriage, making the nation’s capital the first jurisdiction below the Mason-Dixon Line to allow such unions. The bill, which passed by an 11-to-2 vote, may still face obstacles in Congress, among city voters and in the courts, but most advocates of same-sex marriage say they expect it to become law by spring. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has said he will sign the bill.
