More Seniors Are Choosing Self-Employment

If you want to find America's entrepreneurs, should you be searching places frequented by senior citizens? The answer, from several data sources, appears to be yes. Contrary to the popular perception that entrepreneurship is a young person's game, seniors are more likely than young people to operate their own businesses. Which age group do you think has more entrepreneurs--twentysomethings or those over 55? Despite warnings, U.S. companies remain unprepared for Baby Boomers' exodus

With millions of Baby Boomers poised to age out of the workforce, U.S. companies remain unprepared for an imminent talent drain that threatens to alter the national economy, according to a new report by the Sloan Center on Aging & Work at Boston College. Nearly 70 percent of the almost 700 organizations surveyed do not yet know how old their workers are or how many are likely to retire. Guest Blog: Looking for Work in Your Fifties

Until 18 months ago, I had a terrific job with a wonderful nonprofit organization — a position created for me. Like many of my generation, I had turned my skills to the benefit of a worthy cause, seeking to “feed my soul.” The organization made a difference and the role offered genuine satisfaction.
