Iowa Human & Civil Rights VISTA Project

AmeriCorpsVISTA is a national community service organization focused on alleviating poverty by providing full-time volunteers.  With the connection between discrimination and poverty, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission was successful in being approved for a VISTA project.  The main goals of this VISTA project are to alleviate poverty through capacity building and create sustainability for local human and civil rights agencies.  This VISTA project has been designed to build upon the partnerships of local commissions and to forge partnerships with stakeholder groups.

VISTA helps with building partnerships with other civil and human rights agencies and stakeholder groups, researching and applying for grant and other funding sources, creating resources (i.e., commission brochure, video, explanatory pamphlets), planning events, and coordinating education & outreach activities. The Iowa Human & Civil Rights VISTA Project is one of the first VISTA projects sponsored by a civil rights commission.  The first VISTA started in November 2006 and now the Project comprises of 26 full-time VISTA members and 19 Summer Associates.
